Energy is at the heart of development. Monetizing natural gas with electricity production should help to bridge the country's energy deficit and provide a stable electricity supply to its booming mining industry.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has long been making significant efforts to achieve national energy development. Its stated objective is an electrification rate of 301 TEUs by 2024, compared to 191 TEUs today. Despite enormous potential, a large portion of the country remains without electricity. Locally available natural gas offers an opportunity to strengthen electricity generation capacity in the short term and ensure a stable and affordable electricity supply for industries and mining companies in the DRC.

A Master Plan for Gas (MPG) has been established to better develop and utilize the country's gas reserves, which amount to 238 billion cubic meters, the seventh largest in Africa. Natural gas is intended to support economic development and electrification.

Thus, methane from Lake Kivu could finally provide electricity to the Congolese people. It could also be used in the manufacture of chemical fertilizers for agriculture, as a heat source for cement plants, as domestic gas for cooking, and as fuel for transportation. Boosting the exploitation of methane gas from Lake Kivu is therefore a response to the energy needs of the country's two largest provinces, North and South Kivu.

Furthermore, several Congolese companies have partnered to develop a power plant project in Kongo-Central province, with gas to be supplied by the French oil company Perenco. The electricity produced would then be sold, in part, to the mining industry in the former Greater Katanga region.
